The 78M05 voltage regulator has built-in thermal overload protection to prevent device damage due to excessive junction temperature. It also contains internal short-circuit protection that limits the maximum output current, as well as safe-area protection for the pass transistor that reduces short-circuit current when the voltage across the pass transistor increases.
Although internal power dissipation is automatically limited, the maximum junction temperature of the device must remain below 125°C to meet the datasheet specification. If reliable performance is to be obtained, sufficient heat sinking must be provided to ensure that this limit is not exceeded under worst-case operating conditions (maximum input voltage and load current).

78M05 Pins Explanation

You might wonder about the storage of the remaining voltage; however, the 78M05 is not an energy storage component. Instead, a voltage regulator dissipates the difference between the input and output voltages as heat. The regulator generates more heat with higher input voltages.
Connect the 78M05 voltage regulator to the radiator to dissipate the heat emitted by the voltage regulator during operation and prevent the voltage regulator from burning due to high temperature. By limiting the input voltage of the IC to 2-3 times higher than the output voltage, this reduces the heat dissipated by the regulator.
